Plastic Recycling of Iowa Falls, Inc. has been a leading manufacturer of 100% recycled plastic products for over 30 years. PRIF provides closed-loop programs by collecting and recycling over 5 million pounds of scrap plastic annually and converting it to viable, cost-effective site furnishing such as park benches and picnic tables.
With global e-waste expected to top 50 billion tons by the end of 2018, the Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency partnered with New Bohemian Innovation Collaborative (NewBoCo) to provide week long programs on e-waste and resource recovery. The program, Tech Trash or Treasure, had students from 1st through 6th grades de-manufacturing items from VCRs to smartphones in a non-destructive way, learning about reparability and recoverability while studying the electronics recycling process.
The Dyersville Area Chamber of Commerce established a community Fix-It Day as part of a “Money-Wise Week” to extend product lifecycles, save money and reduce solid waste generation. The 2018 Fix-It Day was a success with a total of 27 participants and 18 repaired items. Participants appreciated the repair education provided by volunteer handypersons.
Hy-Vee’s Chariton Distribution Center is a hub for product distribution to more than 245 Hy-Vee stores. The 95-acre campus comprises 1.3 million square feet of warehouse operations for grocery, produce, frozen, health/beauty/cosmetics and pharmacy, as well as a graphics department, truck shop and grounds maintenance. As of June 2018, the center achieved a Platinum Level certification under the TRUE Zero Waste rating system, with a 12-month diversion rate prior to certification of 99.15 percent.
